What's happened to the MySQL Storage Engine Vendor Advisory Board?

As most of you know, the Engine Vendor Advisory Board was setup by Oracle under terms that Oracle specified for themselves when acquiring MySQL. I am referring to point number 8, on the 10 point list that played a major role in quieting nervous Bureaucrats in Europe.

PrimeBase Technologies is a member of the Board and so far we have heard nothing of a meeting this year.

Has the Board been quietly disbanded?

If so, what does this mean for the other promises on Oracles list...

UPDATE: We are in contact with Oracle concerning this. I will keep you all posted. Hopefully it was just a communications error.

Have you tried to contact Oracle before making a public post about it?

Of course, apparently the e-mail was lost.

Given that Oracle/MySQL has dropped any strategies for 3rd party storage engines and related partnerships, I'm sure it's easy to forget a promise to have a meaningless meeting for the next 5 years. Nothing like a blog post to help find those lost emails.

But seriously, if they now arrange this storage engine advisory meeting, does it actually have some value to you to attend? What do you still get out of it? I'm really asking just out of curiosity.

Hi Henrik,

"Nothing like a blog post to help find those lost emails"

My thoughts exactly, but in this case I can confirm that this was a genuine communications error, and no bad intent on Oracles part.

However, the question raised by this blog is still in the air.

"What do you still get out of it?"

Your question is justified. One reason is "strategic": we would like to maintain the dialog with Oracle at this level for various reasons. Another is the principle: we expect Oracle to stick to their promises.

Oracle has now scheduled a MySQL Storage Engine partners meeting for Oct 27 2011 at Oracle Headquarters in Redwood Shores.

Well done! :)

Hi Paul,

Is PBXT still under active development?

The last pre-GA release was over 1 year old and it still hasn't become GA. I checked out launchpad and both the 1.1 and 1.5 branches have not been modified for over a year.

Hi Andy,

We have 1000's of installations using PBXT and are maintaining the code. The latest version can be found in MariaDB.

I'm curious as to whether this meeting took place and whether it was of any value.

Hi Matt,

my Name is Volker Oboda and I joined the storage engine vendor meeting for PrimeBase Technologies. Yes, the meeting took place. We received updates about the plans for the next Innodb version. All vendors could present their plans and ideas about their next versions. We have had a good discussion about the future plans for MySQL. I would say, it was a good meeting. Thanks to Oracle.

I would like toy know if PBXT is still under development?

Hi Kyriakos,

Unfortunately PBXT was not able to make the transition from a one company project to a true community project.

Broader support would have made it possible for development to continue if one or the other company or individual needed to set other priorities.

So the short answer is, no, the engine is no longer under active development. :(
